Friendly Bacteria

Why You Should Not Be Afraid Of It

There is a lot of talk recently about bacteria and how you should be very careful of them. We are now sterilizing our hands, our counters and our loved ones. What we are also talking about is probiotics, and those are the good guys….

There are commercials on TV that tell you to take theirs, as they will promote gut health and give the impression of a slim body. The gut health is the important part. What they fail to tell you is that theirs has little to none of the really good guys and eating their yogurt is akin to eating a chocolate bar that was swiped in a teaspoon of yogurt. A lot of sugar and little of the stuff you really want. Helps to sell a lot of yogurt that is mostly sugar and more sugar. You cannot patent friendly bacteria. They claim theirs is a patented strain. Does that mean you only get one? We need a lot more than just one.

Why do you need friendly bacteria and where can you get it? For a start, there is great friendly bacteria that your gut needs and immune system is dependant on is in real yogurt and kefir. The stuff you make at home, one sold in health food stores or ones that are available in health food sections of most major grocery stores. Whether you eat yogurt and kefir or fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, kombucha or tempeh, these foods provide beneficial bacteria that live in our large intestines. They promote a barrier against viruses, germs, keep your bowels moving and produce important nutrients such as vitamin K, B vitamins and help you to absorb minerals and vitamins.

Fermented foods have been broken down in order to be better digested and whether you eat naturally fermented pickles or any of the other condiments mentioned earlier, you will be getting a good source of these friendly guys that you will feel the difference.

Kombucha is a tea that has been fermented by adding probiotic bacteria and yeast to black or green tea with sugar to aid in the fermentation process. Tastes great and a refreshing way to get the good guys into your system.

Kimchi and miso are best used as condiments. Tempeh is a fermented soybean product that can be used in place of meat or any protein substitute. Can be marinated and then baked, fried, grilled or eaten straight.

Miso, is a fermented soybean or bean paste that is used as a flavouring for sauces, soups and gravies. It is rich in flavour, and varies in colour, taste and saltiness. A little goes a long way. Kimchi, made from cabbage, spicy and used as a condiment can be either mild or quite pungent in its heat component.

Sauerkraut, also from cabbage is usually the mildest in flavouring and many uses from a condiment to a topping to soup. Best eaten raw and not heated for its medicinal benefits. Try it as a topping for your sausage on a bun.

Kefir, is a yogurt like product that is made from fermented milk and has 10-20 different types of probiotic bacteria. It is richer in cultures than yogurt and contains B vitamins and potassium as well as protein and calcium. Easier to digest than dairy products and many who cannot tolerate dairy, do well with these.

If eating these beneficial foods is not your cup of tea, or not possible due to lifestyle then a good quality probiotic powder or capsule is the easiest way to go to ensure a healthy dose of these good guys. We have all the above, in our stores and they are unpasteurized, raw, and come in a variety of different styles. Ask us for our recommendations. We are happy to suggest various products and their best use.
